Elena Zolotnitsky

“My goal is to create paintings that are both well crafted and probe deeply into the mystery of the medium itself, widening the spectrum of that which is portrayed.”

Every one of Elena Zolotnitsky’s paintings are mysterious.  The execution of the planes of color and light create intimacy and bring us into singular moments of tenderness and sensuousness. These aspects of her figurative work, focused on the solemn vulnerability of pre-pubescent girls, translate into the suggestive quality of her still lifes.  The authenticity from which she works comes out in each.  Her training in the style of the Old Masters, her dramatic light and color, combines with her contemporary use of line and structure. Her favorite medium is oil paint on heavy paper, board, canvas, or even transparent mylar, with added illumination from lots of gold leaf.

Since receiving her MFA in Moscow in 1987, she has been the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships in both the U.S. and Europe, and her work has appeared in exhibitions across North America.
